I am a nature and science enthusiast with a passion for inspiring science interest and environmental stewardship in others - especially when it comes to preserving the ocean.
My interest in ocean science extends back to my childhood in Florida, when I realized as a young beachcomber, the diversity and wonder the ocean has to offer. During my undergraduate studies in Biology at Northeastern University, I explored this interest with a SCUBA internship in Honduras, and by taking courses, and interning at NU's Marine Science Center. I couldn't get enough science with just a B.S. so I continued on to get my Master's at the MSC with a thesis exploring nutrient availability and species interactions on New England rocky shores. During undergrad and grad school I developed a keen interest in science education and communication by volunteering with the MSC Outreach Program, the Vancouver Aquarium and as a mentor for non-profits such as Science Club for Girls and Girls Inc.
I love to travel, especially when I can combine traveling with personal/professional enrichment such as traveling for internships or conferences. Crete and Vancouver, BC are among the places I would love to visit again, but not before I check off many other locales on my growing list!
Currently, as an educator at the MSC's Outreach Program I am working on several projects partnering with local schools and the community to share cutting edge research going on at the lab. Also, as part-time educator at the Museum of Science and the MIT Museum, I am enjoying a unique chance to further develop my educational skills in all the STEM disciplines.
I discovered my love for blogging a couple years ago, writing for Northeastern's graduate student research blog. Check out some of those posts here! I definitely owe some of my interest in science communication to bloggers/podcasters such as the folks Science...Sort of among others. These guys make talking science so much fun! I hope to use my blog to engage in this exciting and always evolving conversation.
Besides blogging, I am exploring and trying to increase my use of other social media venues, so help me out by interacting via one of the links to the left!
