An immersive field research experience
for high school students
In 2013, I designed and lead the Marine Biology summer program at the Boston Leadership Institute. This one or three week program gives high school students a taste of what it is like to study and work as a marine biologist. Lectures and labs at the Dana Hall School in Wellesley give students a strong background in Marine Biology concepts such as diversity of marine habitats, physiology of marine organisms and tools and methodology to conduct real ocean science research. An in-class saltwater aquarium allows students access to real marine organisms on a daily basis, while also allowing them to learn the ins and out of caring for these animals. Field trips to marine habitats all around Boston give students the chance to conduct real research in the field such as surveys of marine life on the rocky shore, sandy beach and salt marsh. Students in the three week program use the data we collect during lab experiments and field research to conduct their own research project and present the results to their classmates on the last day of the program.
Students agree, the program combines real science education with fun outdoor activities and is a great way to learn while also enjoying the great New England summer weather.
